Microsoft has announced significant updates to its Xbox console lineup, revealing three new models slated for release during the 2024 holiday season. The announcement introduces changes to the existing Xbox Series X and Series S, focusing on expanded storage and a digital-only option.
New Digital Xbox Series X
The primary reveal is a new, all-digital version of the Xbox Series X. This model foregoes the disc drive, catering to the growing number of gamers who prefer to download their games directly. The digital Series X will come in “Robot White” and feature a 1TB SSD for storage. It will be priced at $449.99/€499.99.
Xbox Series X – 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition
For players who still want a disc drive, a special edition Xbox Series X will be available. It offers a substantial 2TB SSD, double the storage of the standard model. This version, referred to as the “Galaxy Black Special Edition,” features a unique design with a silver, grey, and green celestial effect. It also includes a matching controller. This limited-edition console will cost $599.99/€649.99.
Updated Xbox Series S – 1TB in Robot White
The existing Xbox Series S, typically offered with 512GB of storage, will now also be available with a 1TB SSD in “Robot White.” This matches the color of the new digital Series X, providing a consistent aesthetic across the lineup. The 1TB Series S will be priced at $349.99/€349.99.
Strategic Shift Towards Digital Gaming
The introduction of a discless Xbox Series X reflects a broader industry trend towards digital game distribution. Microsoft’s own Game Pass subscription service, which offers a large library of downloadable games, further incentivizes this shift. By offering a more affordable, digital-only version of its flagship console, Microsoft is likely targeting a wider audience.

All three new console options are scheduled to launch during the holiday 2024 season.
